The Beginning<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 2003, the current Director of The Global Child, Judith Wheeler, was President for the Designer Outlet Stores in Manchester, Vermont. Judith hired Allan Scott-Moncrief, a Scottish painter and filmmaker, to put on a film festival as an event to promote the outlet stores around New England.<\/p>\n

Allan had just come back from Cambodia where he\u2019d been making a documentary film. He told Judith how impressed he was with the intelligence and positive attitudes of the street-working children he\u2019d encountered on the streets of Phnom Penh. He discovered that nearly any of the street-working children went to school or had ever been to school. They had to work the streets begging or selling small items in order to earn about one dollar a day so their families would have enough money to eat.<\/p>\n

Allan met a few of the guardians of these children. He asked them, \u201cIf I were to pay you one dollar a day, would you let your child go to school?\u201d Many said yes, since the dollar a day would substitute for the money the parent would lose from their child no longer working the streets. That \u201cdollar-a-day\u201d concept was the genesis of TGC and continues to be a key aspect of TGC today.<\/p>\n

Our History<\/h3>\n

Phnom Penh<\/strong><\/p>\n

On May 17, 2004, Judith Wheeler, Alan Scott-Moncrieff, and colleagues opened the school in Phnom Penh with 11 students. In the weeks following, they carefully selected 15 more children to bring the numbers up to the targeted 26: 13 boys and 13 girls.<\/p>\n

The school in Phnom Penh was located in a three-story building and was divided into a caf\u00e9 on the ground floor, classrooms, common room, school office, and a rooftop garden retreat. The caf\u00e9 sold coffee, snacks and some merchandise, as well as crafts produced by indigenous artists. All profits from the caf\u00e9 went to school.<\/p>\n

A Cambodian staff member was hired, and a lot of time was spent establishing and maintaining good relations with the Cambodian government. As some kids were orphaned or lived in an unsafe environment, the school also had a safe house where most of the students lived, with boys separate from girls. Every student received three free meals a day at the school. Clothing was also provided in the form of simple school uniforms.<\/p>\n

Siem Reap<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the early 2000s, many rural peasants had been forced off their land and had flooded into Phnom Penh. They couldn\u2019t find work and Phnom Penh became much more chaotic and less safe. In 2008, nearly all the students and staff moved from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap, with many guardians and staff also making the move.<\/p>\n

The school in Siem Reap is located in a more rural setting and consists of two buildings \u2013 the school itself, and another that houses six students and some staff. The other students live with their families. Since moving the school to Siem Reap, TGC has been admitting students that are not orphans but are often former street-working, or potential street-working children because their families are so poor.<\/p>\n

TGC often provides assistance to the families of students, and overall provides financial support for over 200 Cambodians, including staff members and their families. This support of so many Cambodians is why TGC has good relations with the Cambodian government.<\/p>\n

Judith Wheeler<\/h3>\n

With more than 30 years in executive positions within retail sales, Ms. Wheeler has overseen all retail activity, leasing, operations, marketing and management of high-end and luxury brand retail stores and multi-store centers. Ms. Wheeler is currently a consultant to a highly recognized, cutting-edge personal flotation device firm. She has served on the boards of numerous cultural, arts and educational non-profit organizations and has provided pro bono development consulting for such non-profit groups as the Manchester Arts Partnership, the Manchester Film Festival, Southern Vermont Arts Center, the Vermont State Craft Center, the Frog Hollow Board and the Ronald McDonald House.[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.6.6″ _module_preset=”default” header_3_font_size=”34px” header_3_font_size_tablet=”24px” header_3_font_size_phone=”19px” header_3_font_size_last_edited=”on|phone”]<\/p>\n

Chester J. Opalka<\/h3>\n

Chet Opalka is co-founder of Albany Molecular Research, Inc. (AMRI), located in Albany, NY, a full-service chemistry services provider focused on applications for the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and life sciences industries. Prior to founding AMRI, Chet worked for Sterling Drug Inc. in various capacities in the Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Development Departments. He has been named as inventor or co-inventor in nearly 30 patents, co-authored several scientific publications relating to his accomplishments in the field of pharmaceutical chemistry. One invention led to the marketed product, Inocor, a drug used to treat congestive heart failure. Chet received his BS in Chemistry from Niagara University. Since his retirement, Chet has become very active in the local business and philanthropic community. He serves on the Board of the Rensselaer County Regional Chamber of Commerce, non-profit Boards of Trustees for the Sage Colleges, The Freddie Institute for Philanthropy Education and Northeast Health. Karen Opalka<\/h3>\n

Karen Opalka was an elementary educator for more than 30 years. During that time, she was involved with curriculum development and its implementation in all areas of academics and the arts. Since she retired, Karen has been a philanthropist involved primarily in the areas of children, education and the arts. Michael McClurken, Ph.D.<\/h3>\n

Mike McClurken is the retired Vice President of Research and Development for Salient Surgical Technologies, Portsmouth N.H. He has 30 years of experience managing the design and development of medical devices in small start-ups and large organizations. He has eleven issued US patents and has published 13 technical papers on medical technology. Dr. McClurken has developed disposables for American Hospital Supply, implantable vascular grafts for Impra, Inc. (C R Bard), the first transvenous defibrillation lead for CPI (Guidant\/Boston Scientific), and most of Salient Surgical\u2019s electrosurgical products. Jacqueline M. Eastwood<\/h3>\n

Jacqueline Eastwood is the retired President and CEO of Salient Surgical Technologies, Inc., in Portsmouth, N.H., a global leader in devices and techniques that use proprietary technology to enable surgeons to simplify surgery and provide superior care to their patients. Ms. Eastwood was formerly employed by Medtronic Inc., the world\u2019s largest medical technology company specializing in implantable and interventional therapies, from 1987 to 1998. Dr. Victoria Kisekka is an assistant professor at the University at Albany, SUNY. She attained her doctorate in Management Science and Systems from the University at Buffalo, SUNY. \r\n\r\nTaking full responsibility for the education of any child is both complex and expensive, but doing so for a former street-working child is much more difficult.\r\n\r\nOur primary focus is education. Each student receives $1 per day of school attended which serves the dual purpose of training them in personal finance and countering their value as former child-laborers.\r\n\r\nOur educational program includes the Cambodian government's recognized curriculum: Khmer, Math, Social Studies, Geography, Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Earth Science with additional training in English, Health, Computer Class (Digital Art & Cybersecurity), Art, Music and extra-curricular activities such as soccer, volleyball, karate and traditional Cambodian dancing. During their enrollment in our program, students receive housing, healthcare, food, and school supplies.\r\n\r\nAdditionally, each student receives counseling and financial support until they secure employment upon graduation; hopefully following their completion of university but sometimes after receiving vocational training from a trusted partner organization.\r\n\r\nThe Global Child has more than fourteen years of experience investing in and studying the intricacies of street-working children's lives. We are able to identify and address the little understood incentives that lead to child labor and offset them with sustainable entrepreneurial ventures in order to expand our educational programs.\r\n
The Global Child delivers quality education. As a community, we make every conscious effort to offer these students with the best opportunities possible since we know that Cambodia's poor education system generally impels many children to drop out of school. We do this by monitoring teacher-student relationships, developing an applicable curriculum, and giving superior compensation to teaching staff.<\/blockquote>\r\nWe seek and attract the most talented and knowledgeable Cambodian teachers.\u00a0 Student evaluations plus class observations give management the tools to ensure that our teachers' skills meet our standards and improve.\r\n\r\nProspective students are determined through a partnership with local village chiefs who know which children are in the greatest need. TGC then interviews each child laborer and their family, then we select appropriate candidates for an entrance exam, ensuring that each inducted class begins at the same educational level.
